Hilow: A Cool Paint Brushed Display Font for Creative Projects

There’s something about starting fresh on a brand board that feels like opening a blank canvas. I was recently working on a boutique identity project for a small handmade soap shop, and the first thing I needed was a font that could capture the essence of creativity, craftsmanship, and approachability. That’s when I landed on Hilow—a cool paint brushed display font that immediately stood out for its texture and character.

What Makes Hilow Stand Out

Hilow is a display font with a hand-painted feel, as if each letter was brushed onto a surface with care. The strokes have a slight irregularity, giving it a natural, organic look. This makes it perfect for projects that want to convey authenticity, artistry, or a touch of whimsy. It’s PUA encoded, which means accessing all the glyphs and swashes is straightforward, adding versatility without complicating the workflow.

The visual personality of Hilow is playful yet professional. It has enough structure to be legible in larger formats but enough variation to feel unique. It’s not overly ornate, so it doesn’t distract from the message—it enhances it. The mood it creates is warm and inviting, which fits well with lifestyle brands, creative studios, and artisanal products.

Hilow in Real Branding Work

I tested Hilow across several branding elements. For the logo concept, it worked beautifully as a short phrase font. When paired with a clean sans serif for supporting text, it created a nice contrast—modern yet handcrafted. On the brand board, it felt like a natural fit for headers and titles, especially when paired with imagery that emphasized texture and craftsmanship.

On a packaging mockup, Hilow added a tactile quality to the label design. It looked great on a product bottle, especially when used with a subtle background texture. The brush stroke effect gave the label a sense of being handmade, which aligned perfectly with the brand’s values.

In social media graphics, Hilow brought a friendly and approachable vibe. Used on Instagram posts or Facebook ads, it helped create a visual hierarchy that drew attention to key messages without overwhelming the viewer. It also performed well on a website header, where it served as a strong headline without losing clarity.

For business cards, I found Hilow to be effective when used sparingly. It worked best as an accent or secondary font, allowing the primary information to remain clear and readable. In a poster or flyer, it made headlines pop while maintaining a cohesive design language.

When to Use (and Avoid) Hilow

Hilow shines as a display font, headline font, or short phrase font. It’s ideal for logos, brand tags, packaging labels, and web headers. However, it may not be the best choice for long body text due to its stylized nature. Reading extended passages in Hilow could become tiring for the reader, especially at smaller sizes.

It’s also worth noting that Hilow might not suit formal corporate use. Its playful and artistic style works better for lifestyle brands, creative studios, or artisanal businesses rather than traditional financial or legal institutions. If you’re designing for a more conservative audience, consider pairing it with a more neutral typeface for balance.

Font Pairing and Practical Tips

When pairing Hilow with other fonts, I found that a modern sans serif like Montserrat or a classic serif like Playfair Display provided a great contrast. The combination allowed Hilow to stand out as a decorative element while keeping the rest of the content clean and professional.

Another tip is to test Hilow in different contexts before committing to it in final client work. Try it on a shop sign, a homepage hero section, or even a printed card to see how it behaves in real-world applications. Also, always check the commercial font licensing to ensure it’s appropriate for your intended use, whether that’s for a brand identity, packaging, merchandise, or digital products.

Hilow comes with various styles, alternates, ligatures, and swashes, which can be accessed easily thanks to its PUA encoding. This makes it highly customizable for creative projects. Whether you need a subtle variation or a bold statement, Hilow offers flexibility without sacrificing readability or style.

If you're looking for a premium display font that brings warmth, texture, and personality to your designs, Hilow is definitely worth exploring. It’s a versatile tool that can elevate your creative work while staying true to the brand’s voice and vision.
